Portable sewing tables are sometimes necessary for sewers that love the hobby, but just don’t have the space to set up a permanent sewing area. While standard sewing tables are big, bulky, and normally made of wood, portable sewing tables usually take up less space and are made with lightweight particle board, veneer, or plastic.

Buying a portable sewing table will also save you some money if you are just starting out with the hobby and don’t want to invest in a pricey sewing table right away. You can find a great portable sewing table for around $100-$150 dollars tops, as compared to wooden sewing tables and cabinets that are usually around $250-$350. A portable sewing table will cost less because of the materials used, and the smaller size of the table.

The main advantage of a portable sewing table is its ability to fold up or store away without much effort. Most portable sewing tables will either fold up completely, or have a leaf that will fold down to save space. When unfolded, a portable sewing table could give you just as much room as a regular sewing table would. A disadvantage is that a portable sewing table might not have the extra drawers or shelves that a regular sewing table will usually have. However, if space is a concern, the portable sewing table does win out overall.

Portable sewing tables also normally are lightweight enough to move around easily and transport if necessary. They sometimes also have rotating lockable casters so that they can be wheeled around for easier mobility. This makes it especially easy to roll your portable sewing table around and into a storage area when needed. The idea is that the table be small enough to fit into a closet or small space when it’s not being used to give you that extra room when you are not sewing.

Even if a table isn’t specifically labeled a portable sewing table, some standard, lightweight, folding tables can make great sewing tables. Any table that is sturdy enough to support your sewing machine and has enough room for your accessories and fabric will make a good sewing table. All-purpose tables or card tables will do just fine for a portable sewing table, and are usually a little bit less expensive than a table or cabinet specifically made for sewing.

A couple of things to look for when you are buying a portable sewing table are the durability of the table, any warranty on the table, extra storage space and the ease of mobility. While you want a table to be lightweight and ease to move, you also don’t want a table that is too cheap and will shake or move under the weight and movement of a sewing machine. If drawers and shelves are important to you, you’ll also want to stay away from an all-purpose folding table that will not offer these features. Lastly, if you are going to be the one moving the table to and from a storage area, you need to be comfortable with the weight and folding mechanisms of the table so that you’ll be able to handle moving the table around on your own.
